The AMD Athlon 64 processor is the industry’s first 64-bit, x86 technology implementation for desktop and mobile PCs. The AMD Athlon 64 features a high-speed, scalable system bus using HyperTransport technology, which increases overall performance by removing or reducing I/O bottlenecks, increasing bandwidth and reducing latency. The AMD Athlon 64 processor includes an integrated memory controller, which can boost performance by directly connecting the processor to the memory and dramatically reducing memory latency.

The power consumption of today's processors is getting fairly high --- pushing the limits of what can be effectively air cooled. If you increase the processor clock without shrinking the dye, you increase the power required as well. With the limits of power and miniaturization clearly visible on the horizon, the strive for more performance has to look to another solution. Parallelization provides that solution.

Parallelization has been around for sometime now. Multiple processor machines are common in server and workstation world. But now it's coming to the Home PC market with AMD's new dual core Athlon64 X2 processors. Placing two processor cores on one dye, allows AMD to produce cheaper parrallel solutions that fit into today's ATX and μATX Chassises.

AMD's Athlon64 X2 processors provide an excellent platform for multitasking OSes such as Linux and Windows.
